Key points

  • Xiaohongshu (RedNote) is where people discover and compare businesses. WeChat is where they ask questions, book and come back.
  • Most North American businesses need both, usually in that order. A business that already has Chinese customers can start with WeChat.
  • The value is in the handoff between the two, planned around each platform’s rules on contact details and claims.

The short answer

If Chinese customers do not know your business yet, start with Xiaohongshu. It is searchable, it recommends posts to people who have never heard of you, and it is where Chinese Americans and Chinese Canadians look for first-hand experiences before they choose a clinic, a school or a trip.

If you already have Chinese customers and want more repeat visits and referrals, start with WeChat. It is a private, relationship channel: people reach you through a QR code, a referral or a link, and then stay in touch.

For most established businesses the real answer is both, with a plan for how a reader on Xiaohongshu becomes a conversation on WeChat and then an appointment on your calendar.

Xiaohongshu: discovery and trust

Xiaohongshu, also called RedNote or Little Red Book, combines a social feed with a search engine for lifestyle decisions. Fortune reported a user base of about 350 million in 2025. For a business in Los Angeles, New York or Vancouver, the useful part is local search: someone types the name of a procedure, a neighborhood or a type of business and reads what other people wrote.

That shapes what works on the platform:

  • Posts that teach or show something real perform better than advertisements. A surgeon explaining who is and is not a candidate earns more trust than a discount.
  • Consistency matters. Accounts that publish every week build a body of searchable posts that keeps working for months.
  • Comments are part of the content. Prospective customers read the questions other people asked and how the business answered.
  • Paid promotion works best on posts that already perform well organically.

Xiaohongshu also limits what a business can publish. Its community rules restrict promotional language, posting phone numbers or WeChat IDs to move people off the platform, and medical claims. Businesses outside mainland China tend to feel this strictly. The rules change, so check the current guidelines in the app’s help center before you launch, and plan your account structure around them.

Businesses can apply for a verified professional account. Which documents are accepted, and which countries are open for verification, has changed over time, so confirm the current requirements with Xiaohongshu before you apply.

WeChat: conversation, service and retention

WeChat is far larger than Xiaohongshu. Tencent reported 1.418 billion combined monthly active users of Weixin and WeChat at the end of 2025. Most of that is in mainland China, but for Chinese families in North America it is still the default way to message relatives, friends and, increasingly, businesses.

A business uses WeChat in a few distinct ways:

  • One-to-one chat with a staffed business account, where most questions are answered and most bookings are made.
  • An Official Account for articles, announcements and service menus. According to a July 2026 setup guide, businesses registered outside mainland China can apply only for a Service Account, using their own registration documents, and pay an annual verification fee, currently listed at US$99. Confirm the current terms on WeChat’s official platform before applying.
  • Groups and Moments for existing customers, events and referrals.

What WeChat does not do well is introduce you to people who have never heard of you. That is why it pairs naturally with Xiaohongshu, Google and other channels that bring new readers in.

Which one to start with

Your situationWhere to start
New to Chinese customers in your marketXiaohongshu for awareness, with WeChat ready for the conversations it creates.
Already serving Chinese customersWeChat for repeat visits and referrals, then Xiaohongshu to reach new people.
High-value, considered purchase (medical, travel, education)Both from the start, with someone answering in Chinese quickly.
Regulated categorySeparate educational, official and service accounts on Xiaohongshu, with private questions moved to WeChat.

How the two work together

The path we see most often runs like this:

  1. A reader finds a post on Xiaohongshu through search or the feed.
  2. They comment or send a direct message with a first question.
  3. When the conversation needs detail, and in a way the platform permits, it moves to WeChat.
  4. A person on WeChat answers in Chinese, confirms the fit and offers times.
  5. Your front desk receives the booking with clear notes, in English if your staff need it.
  6. After the visit, WeChat keeps the relationship going and makes referrals easy.

For IQ Laser Vision we split this across four Xiaohongshu accounts: the founder teaches, the verified official account announces, and two service accounts answer questions and move serious prospects to WeChat. Over time, more than 2,000 leads and patients have come through the WeChat concierge.

What to measure on each platform

PlatformLeading signalsBusiness results
XiaohongshuSearches you appear in, saves, comments, direct messagesConversations started, by post
WeChatNew contacts, reply time, follow-ups completedAppointments booked and kept, repeat visits, referrals

Views alone tell you little. What matters is how many people started a conversation, how many booked, and which posts and replies got them there.

Common mistakes

  • Translating English ads and posting them unchanged.
  • Putting contact details in Xiaohongshu posts and losing reach, or the account.
  • Opening a WeChat account that nobody answers in the evening or on weekends, when many inquiries arrive.
  • Running both platforms with no handoff, so people who were interested on one never hear back on the other.
  • Stopping after a few weeks. Both platforms reward steady, long-term activity.

Common questions

Is Xiaohongshu the same as RedNote?

Yes. Xiaohongshu is the Chinese name. RedNote and Little Red Book are the English names used for the same app.

Can a U.S. or Canadian business open a WeChat Official Account?

Yes. Businesses registered outside mainland China can apply for a Service Account with their own registration documents and an annual verification fee. Some features, such as payments, work differently for overseas accounts, so check the current terms before applying.

Do we need both platforms?

Not always on day one. Businesses new to Chinese customers usually start with Xiaohongshu, and businesses with an existing Chinese clientele often start with WeChat. Most add the second platform once the first is running.

Who should answer messages?

Someone fluent in Chinese who knows your services, pricing policy and booking process, and who is available in the evenings and on weekends.
