Xiaohongshu and WeChat, managed for North American businesses.

Chinese American and Chinese Canadian customers use Xiaohongshu (RedNote) to discover and compare businesses, and WeChat to ask questions and stay in touch. We set up and run both, so people who find you on one become customers through the other.

What Xiaohongshu is, and why it matters here.

Xiaohongshu, known in English as RedNote or Little Red Book, had about 350 million users in 2025 according to Fortune. In North America, the Chinese community uses it to choose local businesses.

A search engine for life decisions

Image notes and short videos organized around what people search for: a procedure, a school, a neighborhood, a product.

A local review platform here

People search their city and read what others nearby wrote, much as they would use Yelp or Google Maps.

Different from Instagram and WeChat

Instagram is built around who you follow and WeChat around private chat. Xiaohongshu is built around topics and search, so new customers can find you.

Two platforms, two jobs.

Treating them as the same channel is the most common mistake we see. Each plays a different part in how a customer decides.

Your first 90 days.

Engagements start with a three-month minimum, because the first months build the foundation that results depend on. 98% of our clients continue after those first three months.

  1. Month 1: Foundation

Accounts set up and positioned, verifications filed, and industry whitelisting applied for in the Xiaohongshu business backend, so the account can publish and advertise in its category without being flagged. Chinese platforms enforce their rules strictly; this is the step that keeps accounts safe.

  2. Month 2: First inquiries

Weekly content builds a searchable base, advertising starts on what performs, and the first leads and inquiries arrive and are answered in Chinese.

  3. Month 3: Results build

With the groundwork in place, inquiries and bookings usually become steady. We report each month on reach, inquiries and appointments.

  4. Month 4 onward: Scale

We put more behind what works, add channels and refine the inquiry process with your team.

Account structures that widen reach and spread risk.

For IQ Laser Vision we run four connected Xiaohongshu accounts. The founder teaches, the verified official account announces, and two service accounts answer questions and move serious prospects to WeChat, where our concierge books the consultation.

  • More than 2,000 leads and patients through the WeChat concierge
  • 500+ consultations in the first full year
  • Individual posts with 50,000+ views from an account that never advertises

Rules, regulated categories and what no one can promise.

Xiaohongshu limits promotional language, contact details in posts and medical claims, and applies those rules strictly to businesses outside mainland China. WeChat has its own rules for Official Accounts. These are platform rules.

Separately, U.S. and Canadian law sets requirements of its own, for example on patient privacy, testimonials and advertising claims. Your legal advisers have the final word there.

Our part is experience: across more than eight medical practices we have learned how to structure accounts, review content and move conversations to WeChat at the right moment. No agency can guarantee that an account will never be restricted or that every post will be approved. What we can do is plan for the rules from the first post and respond quickly when they change.

Common questions

What is Xiaohongshu called in English?

RedNote is the English name the app uses. It is also known as Little Red Book, a translation of the Chinese name, and sometimes as XHS or RED.

Is Xiaohongshu only for reaching customers in China?

No. Chinese communities in the United States and Canada use it to find local businesses, and posts can be targeted to people in your city. That local use is what we focus on.

Can businesses outside China advertise on Xiaohongshu?

Yes, we run Xiaohongshu ads for North American clients. Which ad products are available depends on the account’s verification and business category, so we confirm before planning a budget.

Is Xiaohongshu the same as RedNote?

Yes. Xiaohongshu is the Chinese name; RedNote and Little Red Book are English names for the same app.

Can a U.S. or Canadian business get a verified Xiaohongshu account?

Overseas businesses can apply for professional verification. Which documents are accepted and which countries are open has changed over time, so we confirm the current requirements with you before applying.

Do we need a Chinese business license for WeChat?

Not for an Official Account. Businesses registered outside mainland China can apply for a Service Account with their own registration documents. Some features, such as payments, work differently for overseas accounts.

Should we start with Xiaohongshu or WeChat?

If Chinese customers do not know you yet, start with Xiaohongshu and have WeChat ready for the conversations it creates. If you already serve Chinese customers, WeChat can come first.

Can you guarantee our account will not be restricted?

No one can. We plan for each platform’s rules from the first post, separate educational and promotional accounts, review content before it goes out, and respond quickly when rules change.

Who replies to the messages?

Our concierge team, in Chinese, using answers you approve. They screen inquiries and coordinate bookings with your staff.
